Challis

Challis is a city in Custer County, Idaho, United States. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. The city is located in the central part of the state, nestled in the Challis Valley along the Salmon River.

Challis was established in the 1870s during the Idaho Gold Rush. The city was named after A.P. Challis, a prominent figure in the early development of the area. The discovery of gold and other minerals in the region led to a rapid influx of settlers and the establishment of mining operations.

Challis is situated at an elevation of approximately 5,253 feet (1,601 meters) above sea level. The city is surrounded by the Challis National Forest, which offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, fishing, and camping.
