Cervidae

Cervidae (pronounced: /sɜːrˈvɪdiː/), commonly known as the deer family, is a family of ruminant mammals that includes deer, elk, moose, and several other species. The term "Cervidae" comes from the Latin word "cervus," meaning deer.

Etymology

The term "Cervidae" is derived from the Latin "cervus," which translates to "deer." This is a reference to the most common and recognizable members of this family, which include various species of deer.

  • Deer: Deer are the most diverse group within the Cervidae family, with species ranging from the small and delicate roe deer to the large and powerful red deer.
  • Elk: Elk are large cervids found in North America and eastern Asia. They are known for their impressive antlers and their distinctive bugling call.
  • Moose: The moose is the largest member of the Cervidae family and is found in the northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia.
  • Reindeer: Reindeer, also known as caribou in North America, are adapted to life in cold, arctic climates.

  • Antler: Antlers are the large, branching structures that male deer, elk, and moose grow on their heads. They are made of bone and are shed and regrown each year.
