Carroll Hall Shelby (January 11, 1923 – May 10, 2012) was an American automotive designer, racing driver, and entrepreneur. He is best known for his involvement with the AC Cobra and the Ford Mustang which he modified into the Shelby Mustang.

Early Life

Carroll Shelby was born in Leesburg, Texas. He developed an interest in cars and racing at an early age. Shelby served as a flight instructor and test pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.

Racing Career

Shelby began his racing career in the early 1950s. He achieved significant success, including winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 driving for Aston Martin. His racing career was cut short in 1960 due to health issues related to a heart condition.

Automotive Design and Business

After retiring from racing, Shelby turned to automotive design and business. He founded Shelby American in 1962, where he developed the AC Cobra, a high-performance sports car that combined a lightweight British chassis with a powerful American V8 engine.

Ford Mustang and Shelby Mustang

In 1965, Shelby began working with Ford Motor Company to create high-performance versions of the Ford Mustang. The result was the Shelby Mustang, which became an iconic muscle car. Notable models include the Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500.

Shelby continued to be involved in the automotive industry throughout his life. He worked on various projects, including the Dodge Viper in the 1990s.
