Carolyn Kaelin
Carolyn Mary Kaelin (June 4, 1961 – July 28, 2015) was an American breast surgeon, author, and researcher. She was the founding director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Early Life and Education
Carolyn Kaelin was born in Syracuse, New York. She attended Smith College where she graduated summa cum laude. She then earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Kaelin completed her surgical residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Career
Kaelin was a pioneer in the field of breast cancer treatment and research. She was instrumental in developing innovative approaches to breast surgery and patient care. As the director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center, she focused on providing multidisciplinary care to patients with breast cancer.
Kaelin was also a prolific author, contributing to numerous medical journals and writing books aimed at helping women navigate the challenges of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Her work emphasized the importance of patient education and empowerment.
Personal Life
Carolyn Kaelin was married to Keith D. Lillemoe, a fellow surgeon. They had two children together. Despite being diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, Kaelin continued to advocate for breast cancer awareness and support for patients.
