The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) is a unique medical facility located in North Chicago, Illinois. It is the first fully integrated federal health care center in the United States, combining the resources of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The center is named after James A. Lovell, a retired NASA astronaut and United States Navy captain.
History[edit]
The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center was established on October 1, 2010, through the merger of the North Chicago VA Medical Center and the Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes. This integration was part of a broader initiative to improve health care services for both veterans and active-duty military personnel, as well as their families.

The primary care services at the FHCC include routine check-ups, preventive care, and management of chronic conditions. Patients can receive care from both VA and DoD providers, ensuring continuity of care.
Specialty Care[edit]
The center offers various specialty care services, such as cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, and neurology. These services are available to both veterans and active-duty personnel, providing comprehensive care under one roof.
Mental Health Services[edit]
Mental health services at the FHCC include counseling, therapy, and psychiatric care. The center has specialized programs for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and substance abuse.
Emergency Care[edit]
The emergency department at the FHCC is open 24/7 and is equipped to handle a wide range of medical emergencies. The department is staffed by experienced emergency medicine physicians and nurses.
