The Capital and Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) was a district health board in New Zealand responsible for providing and funding public health and disability services for the Wellington Region. It was established under the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000 and served a population of approximately 300,000 people.

History

The Capital and Coast District Health Board was formed in 2001 as part of a nationwide restructuring of the health sector in New Zealand. The restructuring aimed to decentralize health services and improve the delivery of healthcare by creating district health boards that were more responsive to local needs.

Geographic Area

The CCDHB covered the Wellington City, Porirua City, and the Kapiti Coast District south of Peka Peka. This area included both urban and rural communities, with a diverse population in terms of ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic status.

Services

The CCDHB provided a wide range of health services, including:

• Tertiary care
• Mental health services
• Public health services
• Disability support services

The board operated several hospitals, including the Wellington Regional Hospital, which is the main tertiary hospital in the region, and the Kenepuru Community Hospital in Porirua.

Governance

The governance of the CCDHB was overseen by a board of directors, which included both elected and appointed members. The board was responsible for setting the strategic direction of the health board, ensuring financial accountability, and monitoring the performance of the health services provided.

Integration and Collaboration

The CCDHB worked closely with other district health boards, primary health organizations, and community health providers to ensure a coordinated approach to healthcare delivery. This included initiatives to improve access to healthcare, reduce health disparities, and promote health and well-being across the region.

Challenges

Like many health boards, the CCDHB faced challenges such as managing financial constraints, addressing workforce shortages, and meeting the growing demand for healthcare services. The board also focused on improving health outcomes for Māori and Pacific peoples, who often experience poorer health outcomes compared to other groups.

Transition

In 2022, the New Zealand government announced a major reform of the health system, which included the disestablishment of all district health boards, including the CCDHB. The functions and responsibilities of the CCDHB were transferred to Health New Zealand and the Māori Health Authority, as part of efforts to create a more unified and equitable health system.
