Canadian Institutes of Health Research
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the major federal agency responsible for funding health and medical research in Canada. Established in 2000, CIHR replaced the Medical Research Council of Canada and aims to create new scientific knowledge and enable its translation into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health care system.
Structure
CIHR is composed of 13 "virtual" institutes, each focusing on a specific area of health research. These institutes are:
- Institute of Aging
- Institute of Cancer Research
- Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health
- Institute of Gender and Health
- Institute of Genetics
- Institute of Health Services and Policy Research
- Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health
- Institute of Indigenous Peoples' Health
- Institute of Infection and Immunity
- Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis
- Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction
- Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes
- Institute of Population and Public Health
Each institute is led by a Scientific Director and supported by an Institute Advisory Board.

CIHR also collaborates with other national and international research organizations to support large-scale health research initiatives.
Governance
CIHR is governed by a Governing Council, which sets the strategic direction and policies of the organization. The President of CIHR is appointed by the Governor in Council and is responsible for the overall management of the agency.

CIHR-funded research has led to significant advancements in various fields of health and medicine, contributing to the development of new treatments, health policies, and improved health outcomes for Canadians.
