Caldwell Esselstyn

Caldwell Esselstyn (pronounced "KAL-dwell ES-sel-stin") is an American physician, author, and former Olympic rowing champion. He is best known for his advocacy of a low-fat, whole foods, plant-based diet to prevent and reverse heart disease.

Etymology

The name "Caldwell" is of Old English origin and means "cold well". The surname "Esselstyn" is of Dutch origin and means "eastern town".

Biography

Caldwell Esselstyn was born on December 12, 1933, in New York City. He attended Yale University, where he was a member of the rowing team that won a gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. After graduating from Yale, Esselstyn attended the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and later completed his surgical training at the Cleveland Clinic and the George Washington University Hospital.

In 1985, Esselstyn began a study on the effects of a plant-based diet on heart disease. His research found that a low-fat, whole foods, plant-based diet could stop the progression of heart disease and in some cases, reverse it. These findings were published in his book, "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease".
