Cake (band)
Cake is an American alternative rock band from Sacramento, California. Formed in 1991, the band is known for their unique sound that combines a variety of musical genres, including rock, country, funk, Iranian folk music, and hip hop. Cake's music features a wide range of instruments, prominently the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and trumpet. The band's lyrics, often sung in a monotone style by lead vocalist John McCrea, are known for their sarcasm, wit, and social commentary.
History
Cake was formed in 1991 by vocalist John McCrea, guitarist Greg Brown, bassist Sean McFessel, drummer Frank French, and trumpeter Vince DiFiore. The band released their debut album, Motorcade of Generosity, in 1994, which gained them a local following. Their breakthrough came with their second album, Fashion Nugget (1996), which included hits such as "The Distance" and a cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," showcasing the band's eclectic style and humor.
Following the success of Fashion Nugget, Cake released several more albums, including Prolonging the Magic (1998), Comfort Eagle (2001), and Pressure Chief (2004), each continuing to build on the band's distinctive sound and lyrical style. Despite changes in the lineup over the years, with McCrea and DiFiore being the constant members, Cake has maintained a consistent presence in the alternative rock scene.

Cake's music is a blend of various genres, making them difficult to categorize. Their sound is characterized by McCrea's deadpan vocals, DiFiore's prominent trumpet lines, and a minimalist approach to production. The band cites a wide range of influences, from country music to funk, soul, and new wave, reflecting the diverse musical tastes of its members.
