The COVID-19 pandemic in Poland (Polish pronunciation: [kɔvid dɛvʲɛntʃɛnɛ pandɛmja w pɔlsʲɛ]) is a part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have spread to Poland on 4 March 2020.
Etymology
The term "COVID-19" is derived from "Coronavirus Disease 2019". The virus itself is named "SARS-CoV-2" due to its genetic similarity to the virus that caused the SARS outbreak in 2002 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus).
Epidemiology
The first case of the disease in Poland was registered in Zielona Góra with a patient who came from Germany. The significant increase in people infected with Coronavirus started in the second half of March 2020.
