C-4 (pronounced see-four) is a common variety of the plastic explosive family known as Composition C.

Etymology

The name C-4 is derived from the fact that it is the fourth in the series of the Composition C plastic explosives. The "C" in the name stands for "Composition" and the "4" signifies that it is the fourth version of these explosives.

Description

C-4 is composed of explosives, plastic binder, plasticizer and, usually, a marker or odorizing taggant chemical. It is malleable and can be molded into any desired shape. C-4 is stable and safe to handle, as it requires a shock or high temperature to detonate.

Usage

C-4 is commonly used by the military, demolition teams, and terrorists due to its stability and high explosive power. It is often used in conjunction with a Blasting cap to initiate the explosive reaction.
