Buteyko method
Buteyko method
The Buteyko method (pronounced boo-tay-ko) is a breathing technique developed in the mid-20th century by Ukrainian doctor Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko. The method is based on the premise that numerous medical conditions, including asthma, are caused by chronically increased respiratory rate or hyperventilation.
Etymology
The Buteyko method is named after its founder, Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko. Buteyko was a Ukrainian doctor who developed the method in the 1950s as a treatment for conditions such as asthma, hypertension, and sleep apnea.
Methodology
The Buteyko method involves exercises that focus on nasal-breathing, breath-holding and relaxation. The goal is to correct the breathing pattern and reduce the respiratory rate to normal levels, which Buteyko believed would alleviate symptoms of various medical conditions.
Medical Conditions Treated
The Buteyko method has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
Effectiveness and Criticism
While some studies have shown that the Buteyko method can improve symptoms of asthma and other respiratory conditions, the technique is not universally accepted in the medical community. Critics argue that there is insufficient scientific evidence to support Buteyko's claims, and that more rigorous, controlled studies are needed.
