Budgerigar Colour Genetics

The Budgerigar colour genetics (pronunciation: /ˈbʌdʒərɪɡɑːr/), also known as Budgie colour genetics, refers to the study of the hereditary traits that determine the colour and pattern variations in the feathers of the budgerigar, a small parrot species native to Australia.

Etymology

The term "Budgerigar" is derived from the Aboriginal Australian term "Betcherrygah", which translates to "good bird". The term "genetics" originates from the Greek word "genetikos", meaning "genitive" and "genesis" meaning "origin".

Overview

Budgerigar colour genetics is a complex field of study due to the wide range of possible colour combinations. The primary colours of budgerigars are green and blue, with variations including grey, violet, and yellow. These colours are determined by two sets of alleles: the blue series and the green series.

Blue Series

The Blue Series includes sky blue, cobalt, and mauve budgerigars. The blue colour is a result of the absence of yellow pigment, which allows the blue structural colour to be visible.

Green Series

The Green Series includes light green, dark green, and olive budgerigars. The green colour is a result of the presence of yellow pigment, which combines with the blue structural colour to produce green.

Other Variations

Other colour variations are determined by additional genetic factors. For example, the grey factor causes a dilution of the primary colour, while the violet factor intensifies the blue colour.

Related Terms

  • Allele: One of two or more versions of a gene that are found at the same place on a chromosome.
  • Mutation: A change in the DNA sequence that affects genetic information.
  • Pigment: A material that changes the colour of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption.
  • Structural Colour: Colour resulting from microscopically structured surfaces fine enough to interfere with visible light.
