Brownie Mary

Brownie Mary (pronounced: /ˈbraʊni ˈmɛri/), also known as Mary Jane Rathbun (pronounced: /ˈmɛri dʒeɪn ˈræθbʌn/), was an American medical marijuana activist. She was known for her work in providing marijuana-infused brownies to AIDS patients during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the United States.

Etymology

The nickname "Brownie Mary" is a combination of her popular marijuana-infused brownies and her first name, Mary. The term "brownie" in this context refers to the baked good she used to administer medical marijuana, while "Mary" is her first name.

History

Mary Jane Rathbun was born in Minnesota in 1922. She moved to San Francisco in the 1940s, where she became involved in the local LGBTQ community. In the 1980s, during the height of the AIDS epidemic, she began baking and distributing marijuana-infused brownies to AIDS patients. This earned her the nickname "Brownie Mary."
