Brett Elliott Crozier is a retired United States Navy officer and Naval Aviator. He is best known for his command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), an aircraft carrier, during the COVID-19 pandemic. His actions during this time brought him national attention and highlighted issues of leadership and responsibility in the military.

Early Life and Education

Brett Crozier was born in Santa Rosa, California. He attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Crozier later earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

Crozier was designated a Naval Aviator in 1994. He served in various capacities, including as a pilot of the F/A-18 Hornet and later the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. His early assignments included deployments aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).

In November 2019, Crozier took command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). During his tenure, the ship was deployed to the Indo-Pacific region. In March 2020, the ship experienced a significant outbreak of COVID-19, leading Crozier to write a letter to Navy leadership requesting assistance. The letter was leaked to the media, resulting in Crozier's removal from command.

Controversy and Aftermath

Crozier's removal sparked widespread debate about military leadership and the handling of the pandemic. Many viewed his actions as a necessary step to protect his crew, while others criticized the breach of protocol. Following an investigation, Crozier was reassigned to a shore-based position.
