Brett Crozier was born in Santa Rosa, California. He attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Crozier later earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

The letter was leaked to the media, resulting in Crozier's removal from command.
