Breathe (2017 film)

Breathe is a 2017 biographical film directed by Andy Serkis in his directorial debut. The film stars Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy and is based on the true story of Robin Cavendish, who became a pioneering advocate for the disabled after being paralyzed by polio.

Plot

The film follows the life of Robin Cavendish (played by Andrew Garfield), who is struck by polio at the age of 28, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. Despite his prognosis of only a few months to live, Robin's wife, Diana Cavendish (played by Claire Foy), brings him home from the hospital. With the help of their friends, including the inventive Teddy Hall, they develop a wheelchair with a built-in respirator, allowing Robin to live a more independent life. The film chronicles Robin's journey as he becomes an advocate for the disabled, fighting for better treatment and mobility solutions.

Production

The film was produced by Jonathan Cavendish, the son of Robin Cavendish, through his production company, The Imaginarium Studios. The screenplay was written by William Nicholson. Principal photography began in the summer of 2016, with locations including South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Release

Breathe premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2017. It was later released in the United Kingdom on October 27, 2017, and in the United States on October 13, 2017.

Reception

The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy's performances were particularly praised. The film was noted for its inspirational story and emotional depth.
