Bovine papular stomatitis virus
Bovine papular stomatitis virus (pronunciation: boh-vine pap-yuh-lar stom-uh-tie-tis vahy-ruhs) is a Parapoxvirus that causes a disease in cattle known as Bovine papular stomatitis. The etymology of the term is derived from the Latin bos meaning ox, papula meaning pimple, stoma meaning mouth, and itis meaning inflammation. The term "virus" is derived from the Latin virus meaning poison or slimy liquid.
Overview
Bovine papular stomatitis virus is a member of the Poxviridae family. It is characterized by the formation of papules and nodules on the muzzle, lips, and oral mucosa of cattle. The disease is usually mild and self-limiting, but can cause significant discomfort and weight loss in affected animals.
Transmission
