Bovine papular stomatitis
Bovine Papular Stomatitis
Bovine papular stomatitis (pronunciation: boh-vine pap-yuh-lar sto-muh-tie-tis) is a viral disease that affects cattle. It is caused by the Bovine papular stomatitis virus (BPSV), a member of the Parapoxvirus genus.
Etymology
The term "bovine" is derived from the Latin word "bos", meaning "cow". "Papular" refers to the papules, or small, raised bumps that appear on the skin. "Stomatitis" is a general term for inflammation of the mouth, from the Greek words "stoma" meaning "mouth", and "-itis" meaning "inflammation".
Symptoms
The primary symptom of bovine papular stomatitis is the presence of papules on the muzzle, lips, and in the mouth of the affected cattle. These papules may progress to form crusty scabs. Other symptoms may include drooling, difficulty eating, and weight loss.
Transmission
Bovine papular stomatitis is transmitted through direct contact with the saliva or nasal secretions of infected animals. It can also be spread indirectly through contaminated feed or water.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of bovine papular stomatitis is typically made based on the clinical signs and confirmed by laboratory testing. This may include Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing or virus isolation.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for bovine papular stomatitis. Management typically involves supportive care, such as ensuring the animal has access to soft food and clean water. In severe cases, anti-inflammatory drugs may be used to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Prevention
Prevention of bovine papular stomatitis involves good biosecurity practices, such as isolating new or sick animals and regularly cleaning and disinfecting feed and water containers.
