From WikiMD's Medical Encyclopedia

Bothropslanceolatus
Trigonocephale

Bothrops lanceolatus, commonly known as the Fer-de-Lance or Martinique lancehead, is a highly venomous pit viper species found on the island of Martinique in the Lesser Antilles. It is the only species of the genus Bothrops that is endemic to Martinique.

Description[edit]

Bothrops lanceolatus is a large snake, with adults typically reaching lengths of 1.5 to 2 meters. The coloration of this species varies, but it generally has a pattern of dark brown or black markings on a lighter brown or gray background. The head is distinctly triangular, characteristic of pit vipers, and it has heat-sensing pits located between the eyes and nostrils.

Habitat[edit]

This species inhabits a variety of environments on Martinique, including rainforests, dry forests, and areas of human habitation. It is often found near water sources, such as rivers and streams, where it hunts for prey.

Behavior[edit]

Bothrops lanceolatus is primarily nocturnal, hunting at night for small mammals, birds, and amphibians. It is known for its potent venom, which it uses to immobilize and pre-digest its prey. The snake is generally solitary, except during the breeding season.

Venom[edit]

The venom of Bothrops lanceolatus is hemotoxic, causing significant damage to blood vessels and tissues. Envenomation can result in severe pain, swelling, necrosis, and in some cases, death. Antivenom is available and is the primary treatment for bites from this species.

Conservation Status[edit]

The conservation status of Bothrops lanceolatus is currently not well-documented. However, habitat destruction and human encroachment pose potential threats to its population.
