Bono is also widely recognized for his activism concerning Africa, for which he co-founded the organizations DATA, EDUN, the ONE Campaign, and Product (RED).
Early Life
Bono was born in Dublin, Ireland, and raised in the suburb of Finglas. He attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School, where he met his future wife, Alison Stewart, and the members of U2. Bono's early life was marked by the death of his mother, Iris, when he was 14 years old, an event that had a profound impact on his songwriting.
Career with U2
In 1976, Bono joined the band that would become U2, which was formed by Larry Mullen Jr., The Edge, and Adam Clayton. The band released their debut album, Boy, in 1980. U2 gained international fame with their 1987 album The Joshua Tree, which included hits like "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". Bono's distinctive voice and impassioned performances have been a hallmark of the band's success.
Activism and Philanthropy
Bono is known for his activism, particularly in the areas of human rights and global poverty. He has been involved in numerous campaigns and initiatives, including Live Aid, Live 8, and the Jubilee 2000 campaign. In 2002, he co-founded DATA to raise awareness about AIDS and extreme poverty in Africa. Bono has also worked with world leaders and organizations to promote debt relief and fair trade.
Personal Life
Bono married Alison Stewart in 1982, and they have four children. The family resides in Killiney, a suburb of Dublin. Bono is known for his distinctive style, often wearing sunglasses due to a sensitivity to light.
Awards and Honors
Bono has received numerous awards for his music and humanitarian work, including the Nobel Peace Prize nomination, the Time Person of the Year award (shared with Bill Gates and Melinda Gates), and an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.
