Bone marrow biopsy - (pronounced) (Bone MAYR-oh BY-op-see) procedure in which a small sample of bone containing bone marrow is taken, usually from the hip bone. A small area of skin and the underlying bone surface are numbed with an anesthetic. Then a special, wide needle is inserted into the bone and twisted to take a sample of the bone with the bone marrow inside. The sample is sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope. This procedure can be performed at the same time as a bone marrow biopsy
