Boggle is a word game developed by Allan Turoff and originally distributed by Parker Brothers. The game is played using a plastic grid of lettered dice, in which players attempt to find words in sequences of adjacent letters.

Gameplay

The game begins by shaking a covered tray of 16 cubic dice, each with a different letter printed on each of its sides. The dice settle into a 4x4 tray so that only the top letter of each cube is visible. After they have settled into the grid, a three-minute timer is started, and all players simultaneously begin the main phase of play.

The goal of Boggle is to find as many words as possible in a 4x4 grid of letters within three minutes. Words are formed from letters that adjoin horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to the immediate left, right, or up-and-down. No letter may be used more than once within a single word.

Players write down the words they find on a piece of paper. At the end of the timer, players compare their lists of words. Any word that appears on more than one player's list is crossed off all lists, meaning no points are awarded for that word. Players score points based on the length of the words they find, with longer words scoring more points.

Variations

Over the years, several variations of Boggle have been released. These include:

- Big Boggle: A version with a 5x5 letter grid, rather than the standard 4x4, allowing for longer words. - Boggle Junior: A simplified version intended for younger players. - Super Boggle: Features a 6x6 grid and a four-minute timer, providing a more challenging experience.

Strategy

Successful Boggle players often employ strategies such as quickly scanning for prefixes or suffixes and then building different words by changing the middle letters. Knowledge of a large vocabulary and the ability to recognize patterns quickly are also advantageous.
