Bob's Big Boy
Bob's Big Boy[edit]

Bob's Big Boy is a chain of diner-style restaurants founded by Bob Wian in 1936 in Glendale, California. Known for its iconic double-decker hamburger, the chain has become a staple of American fast food culture. The brand is easily recognizable by its mascot, the "Big Boy," a chubby boy in red-and-white checkered overalls holding a hamburger.
History[edit]
The first Bob's Big Boy restaurant was opened by Bob Wian in 1936. Wian, a former dishwasher, sold his car to purchase a small diner called "Bob's Pantry." The restaurant's signature item, the Big Boy hamburger, was created when a customer requested something different. Wian sliced a bun into three pieces and added two hamburger patties, creating the first double-decker hamburger.
The chain expanded rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s, becoming a popular destination for families and teenagers. The restaurants were known for their carhop service and distinctive architecture, featuring large windows and bright neon signs.
Architecture and Design[edit]

Bob's Big Boy restaurants are noted for their Googie architecture, a style that emerged in Southern California during the mid-20th century. This architectural style is characterized by futuristic designs, bold angles, and the use of glass and neon. The Burbank location, built in 1949, is a prime example of this style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Big Boy Mascot[edit]

The Big Boy mascot was inspired by a chubby young boy who frequented the original restaurant. The character was designed by Benny Washam, an animator for Warner Bros., and has become an enduring symbol of the brand. Statues of the Big Boy are often found outside the restaurants, welcoming guests with a cheerful smile.
Menu[edit]
The menu at Bob's Big Boy features classic American diner fare, including the famous Big Boy hamburger, fries, milkshakes, and breakfast items. The Big Boy hamburger is served with a special sauce, lettuce, and cheese, and is often accompanied by a side of crispy fries.
Cultural Impact[edit]
Bob's Big Boy has been featured in numerous films and television shows, cementing its place in American pop culture. The restaurant's nostalgic appeal and classic design have made it a popular filming location and a beloved icon of mid-century Americana.
