Blacks' Medical Dictionary
Blacks' Medical Dictionary (IPA: /blæks 'mɛdɪkəl 'dɪkʃənɛri/), also known as BMD, is a comprehensive medical reference book that has been published since 1906. The term "Blacks" in the title refers to the original publisher, A & C Black Ltd, and not a racial or ethnic group.
Etymology
The term "Blacks" originates from the name of the publishing company, A & C Black Ltd, which was founded by Adam and Charles Black in 1807 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The term "Medical Dictionary" is derived from the Latin "medicus" meaning "physician" and the English "dictionary" meaning "a reference book listing alphabetically terms or names important to a particular subject or activity along with discussion of their meanings and applications."
