Biomedical Equipment Technician

A Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET), also known as a biomedical engineering technician, is a highly skilled technologist who ensures that medical equipment is well-maintained, properly configured, and safely functional.

Pronunciation: /ˌbaɪoʊˈmɛdɪkəl ɪˈkwɪpmənt tɛkˈnɪʃən/

Etymology: The term "biomedical" is derived from the Greek words "bios" (life) and "medicus" (pertaining to physicians). The term "equipment" comes from the Old French "equipement," meaning "to equip," and "technician" is derived from the Greek "technikos," meaning "of art."

Duties and Responsibilities

A BMET is responsible for the maintenance, repair, calibration, and safety testing of medical devices used in healthcare delivery. This includes a wide range of equipment such as defibrillators, patient monitors, ventilators, and imaging devices.

Education and Training

Most BMETs have an associate's degree in biomedical equipment technology or electronics. However, many have a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering or a related field. Some BMETs also have professional certifications from organizations like the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).
