Founding of ESPN

In 1978, Bill Rasmussen co-founded the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, better known as ESPN. The idea for ESPN came about when Rasmussen was fired from his job at the New England Whalers, a hockey team. He envisioned a 24-hour cable sports channel, which was a novel concept at the time.

Rasmussen, along with his son Scott Rasmussen and Ed Eagan, secured funding and a satellite transponder to launch the network. ESPN went on air for the first time on September 7, 1979, with the debut of "SportsCenter."
