Bilaterians are characterized by having a bilaterally symmetrical body plan at some stage of development. In addition to this symmetry, they typically display triploblastic development, where the body tissues form from three germ layers: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. This contrasts with the diploblastic development of radially symmetrical animals, which only have two germ layers. Another key feature of bilaterians is the presence of a digestive system that has two openings: a mouth and an anus.
