Bilastine

Bilastine is a second-generation antihistamine that is used for the treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and urticaria (hives). It was developed in Spain by FAES Farma. Bilastine is marketed under various trade names worldwide, and is available as a once-daily 20 mg tablet. The drug has been available in Europe since 2010, and in other areas outside the US.

Pharmacology

Bilastine is a selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist that inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells and basophils, thereby preventing the symptoms of allergic reactions. It does not cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore does not cause drowsiness.

Clinical use

Bilastine is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and urticaria. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of ocular symptoms and diseases of the nose, such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal pruritus and congestion, redness, tearing, and itching of the eyes.

Side effects

The most common side effects of bilastine are headache, dizziness, and fatigue. These side effects are usually mild and transient. Bilastine does not increase the risk of sedation or impairment of cognitive functions.

Interactions

Bilastine should not be taken with grapefruit juice as it can increase the level of bilastine in the blood and thus increase the risk of side effects. It should also not be taken with alcohol or other CNS depressants as it can increase the risk of sedation.
