He is often considered the great architect of West Bengal, who founded five eminent cities, Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar, and Habra.

Etymology

The name Bidhan Chandra Roy is of Bengali origin. 'Bidhan' means 'fate', 'Chandra' means 'moon', and 'Roy' is a common surname in Bengal, which was also used as a title of honor conferred by the British during their rule in India.

Biography

Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on July 1, 1882, in Patna, Bihar, India. He graduated from the Medical College, Calcutta, of the University of Calcutta. He later studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London and simultaneously earned his MRCP and FRCS degrees in 1911. He returned to India in 1911 and started his medical career in India.

In 1925, he was elected to the Bengal Legislative Council. After the independence of India, he became the second Chief Minister of West Bengal and remained in his post for 14 years until his death in 1962.

Legacy

In recognition of his lifelong services to the field of medicine and politics, the Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1961. His birth anniversary is celebrated as National Doctors' Day in India.
