The Bicuspid Valve (pronunciation: /bai-kʌs-pɪd vælv/), also known as the Mitral Valve, is a vital component of the human heart. It is one of the four main heart valves that regulate blood flow through the heart.
Etymology
The term "Bicuspid" is derived from Latin, with "bi-" meaning two and "cuspis" meaning point or tip. This refers to the two flaps, or cusps, that make up the valve. The alternative name, "Mitral Valve", is derived from the Latin "mitra", meaning a bishop's mitre (a type of hat), which the valve is said to resemble.
Function
The Bicuspid Valve is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart. Its primary function is to allow oxygen-rich blood to flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle, and to prevent backflow of blood when the ventricle contracts.
