Bethnal Green is a district in the East End of London, England, and part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is located 3.3 miles (5.3 km) northeast of Charing Cross.
History[edit]
Bethnal Green has a rich history dating back to the medieval period. The area was originally a rural hamlet in the ancient parish of Stepney. It became a significant settlement in the 18th century due to the expansion of the silk weaving industry, which attracted many Huguenots fleeing religious persecution in France.
During the 19th century, Bethnal Green became densely populated and was known for its poverty and overcrowded housing. The area was heavily bombed during World War II, leading to significant destruction and subsequent redevelopment.
