The Berlin International Film Festival (German: Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin ), also known as the Berlinale, is one of the world's leading film festivals and most reputable media events. It is held annually in Berlin, Germany. The festival was founded in 1951 and has been celebrated every February since then.

The Berlin International Film Festival was established in West Berlin in 1951 by Alfred Bauer, who became the festival's first director. The festival was initially intended to be a showcase for the free world, and it quickly grew in prestige and size.
