Clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide
(Redirected from Benzoyl peroxide/clindamycin)
Clindamycin/Benzoyl Peroxide is a combination medication used in the treatment of acne. It is a topical gel that combines two active ingredients: clindamycin, an antibiotic, and benzoyl peroxide, an antiseptic. This combination works by killing the bacteria that cause acne and by drying the skin.
Composition
The medication is composed of 1% clindamycin and 5% benzoyl peroxide. Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide is a type of peroxide and has an antibacterial effect. It also has a mild drying effect, which allows excess oils and dirt to be easily washed away.
Usage
Clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide is usually applied to the affected area once a day, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Before applying the medication, the skin should be washed with a mild cleanser and dried. A thin layer of the gel should be applied to the affected area.
Side Effects
Common side effects of clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide include dryness, redness, burning, itching, or peeling at the application site. If any of these effects persist or worsen, a healthcare professional should be notified immediately.
Precautions
Before using clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide, individuals should inform their healthcare professional if they are allergic to either of the active ingredients, or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Interactions
Drug interactions may change how medications work or increase the risk for serious side effects. A healthcare professional should be consulted before starting, stopping, or changing the dosage of any medicine.
