Benewah Milk Bottle
Benewah Milk Bottle
The Benewah Milk Bottle is a historic landmark located in Spokane, Washington. It is a giant milk bottle-shaped structure that was built in 1935 and originally served as a drive-in dairy store.
History
The Benewah Milk Bottle was designed by local architect George Prentice and was commissioned by the Benewah Creamery Company. The creamery was a popular local dairy that operated in Spokane during the early 20th century.
The milk bottle was constructed using reinforced concrete and stands at a height of 38 feet. It was originally used as a drive-in dairy store, where customers could purchase fresh milk and other dairy products without leaving their vehicles.
Architecture
The Benewah Milk Bottle is an example of novelty architecture, which was popular during the mid-20th century. Its unique shape and size make it a distinctive landmark in Spokane.
The structure features a cylindrical body with a conical top, resembling a giant milk bottle. The exterior is painted white, with the words "Benewah Milk" prominently displayed in red lettering.
Preservation
In 1985, the Benewah Milk Bottle was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural and historical significance. It is one of the few remaining examples of novelty architecture in the region.
Efforts have been made to preserve and maintain the structure over the years. In 2010, the milk bottle underwent a restoration project to repair and repaint the exterior, ensuring its continued presence as a beloved local landmark.
