Belviq

Belviq (pronounced: bel-VEEK) is a weight-loss drug developed by Arena Pharmaceuticals. It is chemically known as lorcaserin hydrochloride.

Etymology

The name "Belviq" is a brand name, likely derived from a combination of words or ideas that suggest weight loss or health. The exact etymology is not publicly known as it is a proprietary name created by the pharmaceutical company.

Usage

Belviq is used together with diet and physical exercise to treat obesity. It is sometimes given to people who have obesity-related health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. Belviq works by controlling appetite — specifically by activating brain receptors for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that triggers feelings of satiety and satisfaction.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Belviq include headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, and constipation. In some cases, it can cause serious side effects like serotonin syndrome, particularly when taken with certain medicines that increase serotonin levels or activate serotonin receptors.

Withdrawn from the US market

On 17 September 2020, the US FDA withdrew approval for lorcaserin and for extended-release lorcaserin tablets
