Belgrade (pronunciation: /ˈbɛlɡreɪd/; Serbian: Beograd / Београд, meaning "White City") is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers and the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain and the Balkan Peninsula.
Etymology
The name Belgrade translates to "White City". The name is derived from the Serbian words "beo" (white) and "grad" (city). The city was named after the white stone walls that once encircled it.
History
