Belarusian (Belarusian: Беларуская мова, Biełaruskaja mova)

Belarusian (Belarusian: Беларуская мова, Biełaruskaja mova) is an East Slavic language spoken primarily in Belarus, and is one of the two official languages of the country, the other being Russian.

Pronunciation

In English, the term "Belarusian" is pronounced as /ˌbɛləˈruːsiən/. In Belarusian, it is pronounced as [bʲɪlaˈruskaja ˈmova].

Etymology

The term "Belarusian" comes from the term "Bela Rus'", which means "White Rus'" in Old East Slavic. The term "Rus'" is a historical term that refers to the medieval state centered in Kyiv, and "Bela" means "white", possibly referring to the region's reputation for freedom and independence in the Middle Ages.
