Bass Library is a library located at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. It is part of the university's extensive library system and serves as a central hub for undergraduate study and research. The library is named after Robert Bass, a Yale alumnus and philanthropist, who made significant contributions to the university.

History[edit]

The Bass Library was originally constructed in 1971 and was known as the Cross Campus Library. It underwent a major renovation and expansion in 2007, funded by a generous donation from Robert Bass. The renovation aimed to modernize the facility, improve accessibility, and create a more conducive environment for study and research.

Architecture[edit]

The library is located underground, beneath Cross Campus, a central quadrangle at Yale. The design incorporates natural light through skylights and glass walls, creating an inviting atmosphere despite its subterranean location. The renovation included the addition of new study spaces, group study rooms, and updated technology to support modern academic needs.

Collections and Resources[edit]

Bass Library houses a diverse collection of materials, including books, periodicals, and electronic resources. It is particularly focused on supporting the undergraduate curriculum, with a strong emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. The library also provides access to a wide range of digital resources, including databases, e-books, and online journals.

Services[edit]

The library offers a variety of services to support student learning and research. These include:

  • Research assistance from librarians
  • Access to course reserves
  • Interlibrary loan services
  • Technology lending, including laptops and other equipment
  • Study spaces, including individual carrels and group study rooms

Special Features[edit]

One of the unique features of Bass Library is its connection to the Sterling Memorial Library, Yale's main library. A tunnel links the two libraries, allowing for easy access to the extensive collections and resources of Sterling Memorial Library.
