Barrier Membrane

Barrier Membrane (pronunciation: /ˈbær.i.ər ˈmɛm.breɪn/) is a medical term used in the field of Dentistry and Periodontology.

Etymology

The term 'Barrier Membrane' is derived from the English words 'Barrier', meaning something that prevents or blocks movement or passage, and 'Membrane', which refers to a thin layer of tissue.

Definition

A Barrier Membrane is a device used in Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) and Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) procedures. Its primary function is to prevent the invasion of faster-growing soft tissues into a wound or defect, thereby allowing slower-growing bone or periodontal ligament cells to repopulate the area.

Types

Barrier Membranes can be classified into two main types: Resorbable Membranes and Non-resorbable Membranes. Resorbable Membranes are made from materials that can be broken down and absorbed by the body over time, while Non-resorbable Membranes are made from materials that cannot be broken down and must be removed surgically.

Related Terms
