Barr Pharmaceuticals was established in 1970 by Edwin A. Cohen. The company initially focused on the development and marketing of generic drugs, which are bioequivalent to brand-name drugs but are typically sold at lower prices. Over the years, Barr Pharmaceuticals expanded its product line to include proprietary pharmaceuticals.
In 2006, Barr Pharmaceuticals acquired Pliva, a Croatian pharmaceutical company, which significantly expanded its presence in the European market. This acquisition made Barr Pharmaceuticals one of the largest generic drug manufacturers in the world.
