Bangladesh Medical College (pronunciation: bæŋgləˈdɛʃ mɛdɪkəl kɒlɪdʒ) is the first private medical college in Bangladesh. It was established in 1986.
Etymology
The term "Bangladesh" is derived from the Bengali words "Bangla" and "Desh", meaning "Country of Bengal". The term "Medical College" is derived from the Latin "medicus", meaning "physician", and the Middle English "college", meaning "an incorporated body of persons".
History
Bangladesh Medical College was established in 1986 by a group of dedicated people called the founder members who were imbued with the ideals of providing quality medical education, research, and services to the people of Bangladesh at a reasonable cost.
Courses
The college offers a five-year course of study, approved by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), leading to a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Dhaka. After passing the final professional examination, there is a compulsory one-year internship.
Affiliations
Bangladesh Medical College is affiliated with the University of Dhaka and recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. It is also listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
