Baklahorani

Baklahorani (also known as Apokries) is a traditional carnival celebration that takes place in Istanbul, Turkey. The event is historically significant for the Greek Orthodox community and is celebrated on the last Monday before Lent, known as Clean Monday.
History[edit]
The origins of Baklahorani can be traced back to the Byzantine Empire, where it was celebrated as part of the pre-Lenten festivities. The name "Baklahorani" is derived from the Greek words "bakla" (broad beans) and "horani" (feast), indicating the consumption of broad beans during the event. The celebration was particularly prominent in the Phanar and Tatavla districts of Istanbul, which were home to large Greek communities.
Celebration[edit]
Baklahorani is marked by a variety of activities, including parades, music, dancing, and feasting. Participants often wear elaborate costumes and masks, similar to other carnival traditions around the world. The event serves as a final opportunity for indulgence before the fasting period of Lent begins.
Parades[edit]
The parades are a central feature of Baklahorani, with participants marching through the streets in colorful attire. These parades often include traditional Greek music and dances, such as the sirtaki and kalamatianos.
Feasting[edit]
Food plays a significant role in the celebration, with a focus on dishes that will be avoided during Lent. Common foods include meat, cheese, and various sweets. Broad beans, from which the festival gets its name, are also a staple.
Cultural Significance[edit]
Baklahorani holds cultural importance for the Greek Orthodox community in Istanbul. It is a time for socializing, celebrating heritage, and preparing for the spiritual journey of Lent. Despite facing periods of decline, the festival has seen a revival in recent years, with efforts to preserve and promote this unique aspect of Istanbul's cultural heritage.
Modern Revival[edit]
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in Baklahorani, with various cultural organizations and community groups working to revive the tradition. These efforts have included organizing events, parades, and educational programs to raise awareness about the historical and cultural significance of the festival.
