The term "bacterial" is derived from the word "bacteria," which is a plural of "bacterium." The word "bacterium" comes from the Greek "bakterion," meaning "small staff."

Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that can live in various environments, including in or on the human body. Some bacteria are beneficial, aiding in digestion or producing vitamins, while others are harmful and can cause disease.
