BUB3 protein

BUB3

BUB3 is a gene that encodes a protein involved in cell division. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the accurate segregation of chromosomes during cell division. Mutations in the BUB3 gene have been associated with various diseases, including cancer.

Function

The BUB3 protein is a key component of the spindle assembly checkpoint, which monitors the attachment of chromosomes to the mitotic spindle during cell division. By detecting errors in chromosome segregation, BUB3 helps prevent the formation of cells with an abnormal number of chromosomes.

Structure

The BUB3 gene is located on chromosome 10 in humans and codes for a protein that contains multiple domains involved in protein-protein interactions. These interactions are essential for the proper functioning of the spindle assembly checkpoint.

Clinical Significance

Mutations in the BUB3 gene have been linked to an increased risk of developing cancer. Dysregulation of the spindle assembly checkpoint can lead to chromosomal instability, a hallmark of many cancer types.

Research

Researchers are actively studying the role of BUB3 in cancer development and progression. Understanding how BUB3 functions at the molecular level may provide insights into potential therapeutic targets for cancer treatment.
