BRFSS (pronounced: B-R-F-S-S, /ˈbiːɑːrɛfɛsɛs/), is an acronym for the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. It is a system used in the United States to track health conditions and risk behaviors.
Etymology
The term BRFSS is an acronym derived from the initial letters of the words Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The term was first used in 1984 when the system was established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Definition
The BRFSS is a health-related telephone survey that collects state data about U.S. residents regarding their health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services. It is the largest continuously conducted health survey system in the world.
