Autoantigens (pronunciation: /ˌɔːtoʊˈæntɪdʒənz/) are proteins, or complexes of proteins and other biological molecules, that are recognized by the immune system of patients suffering from a specific autoimmune disease.

Etymology

The term "autoantigen" is derived from the Greek words "autos" meaning self, and "antigen", from "anti" (against) and "gen" (that which generates).

Definition

An autoantigen is a normal protein or complex of proteins (and sometimes DNA or RNA) that is recognized by the immune system of patients suffering from a specific autoimmune disease. These proteins are usually located within the cell or on the cell surface and, in health, are protected from the immune system. However, in autoimmune diseases, these proteins can be presented to the immune system and an immune response to them can be mounted, causing disease.
