Auditory Processing Disorder (APD, also known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder or CAPD) is a complex problem affecting about 5% of school-aged children.

Pronunciation

/ɔːˈdɪtəri ˈprəʊsesɪŋ dɪsˈɔːdər/

Etymology

The term "Auditory Processing Disorder" is derived from the Latin words "audire" (to hear) and "processus" (a going forward), and the Greek word "διαταραχή" (disturbance).

Definition

Auditory Processing Disorder is a condition that affects the way the brain processes auditory information. Individuals with APD usually have normal structure and function of the outer, middle and inner ear (peripheral hearing). However, they cannot process the information they hear in the same way as others do, which leads to difficulties in recognizing and interpreting sounds, especially the sounds composing speech.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Auditory Processing Disorder include difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, following directions, and differentiating between similar-sounding speech sounds. This can lead to academic and social issues.
