Aspergillus fumigatus

Aspergillus fumigatus (pronunciation: as-per-jil-us fyu-muh-ga-tus) is a species of fungus in the genus Aspergillus, and is one of the most common Aspergillus species to cause disease in individuals with an immunodeficiency.

Etymology

The name Aspergillus fumigatus is derived from the Latin word "aspergillum" which means "holy water sprinkler", due to the similar appearance of the fungus' conidiophore to the aspergillum used in Catholic ceremonies. The species name "fumigatus" comes from the Latin word "fumigate" because of its smoky or cloudy appearance.

Description

Aspergillus fumigatus is a saprotrophic fungus, meaning it obtains its nutrients from decaying organic matter. It is ubiquitous in the environment and can be found in soil, compost heaps, and other decaying vegetation. The fungus produces small, airborne spores which can be easily inhaled, making it a common cause of fungal infections in humans.

Diseases

Aspergillus fumigatus is the primary cause of aspergillosis, a group of diseases caused by Aspergillus. The symptoms of aspergillosis vary greatly, but the disease usually affects the respiratory system. Invasive aspergillosis, a severe form of the disease, occurs when the infection spreads to blood vessels and beyond.

Treatment

Treatment for diseases caused by Aspergillus fumigatus often involves antifungal medications, such as voriconazole and amphotericin B. In severe cases, surgical debridement may be necessary.
