Ashland County, Wisconsin is a county located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 15,913. The county seat is Ashland. The county was created in 1860 and organized in 1864.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,292 square miles (5,937 km²), of which 1,045 square miles (2,707 km²) is land and 1,247 square miles (3,230 km²) (54%) is water. The county is known for its scenic beauty, including parts of the Chequamegon National Forest and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 15,913 people, 6,831 households, and 3,917 families residing in the county. The population density was 15 people per square mile (6/km²). Ashland County is served by several school districts, including the Ashland School District and the Mellen School District. Higher education is provided by Northland College in Ashland.
