Arterial Catheter

An Arterial Catheter (pronounced: ar-TEER-ee-ul KATH-uh-ter), also known as an Arterial Line or Art-Line, is a thin, flexible tube that is inserted into an artery of a patient, typically in the wrist or groin.

Etymology

The term "Arterial Catheter" is derived from the Greek words 'arteria', which means 'windpipe, artery', and 'katheter', which means 'to send down'.

Usage

Arterial catheters are commonly used in intensive care medicine and anesthesia to monitor blood pressure in real-time and to obtain samples for blood gas analysis. They provide continuous measurement of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and mean arterial pressure.

Procedure

The procedure for inserting an arterial catheter involves the use of local anesthesia, followed by the insertion of the catheter into an artery. The catheter is then connected to an electronic monitoring system to measure blood pressure and other vital signs.
